Today, Polynesian artists look to their inspiring past to make contemporary artworks. Anna Kahalekulu, owner of the clothing company Kūlua, is a Hawaiian fashion designer who incorporates traditional repeating patterns and weaving techniques in her clothing designs. Māori artist Bud Smith works in several media to make surfboard sculptures that reference religion, nature, and Māori ancestors. Rapa Nui artist Sandra Atan Teave preserves an important tradition by using barkcloth to model sculptures.
