Located in the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio, Mohr’s As We Are is a 3-D sculpture built in the shape of a human head. One at a time, visitors enter a hollow space in the back of the sculpture’s “neck.” Cameras inside snap pictures of the subject’s head from multiple angles. Then more than 850,000 LED lights illuminate a magnified version of the model’s face on the 14-foot-tall sculpture’s curved surface.
A process called photogrammetry makes this work possible. Computers digitally stitch together multiple photos of a single subject, resulting in a 3-D image. Mohr says the installation “explores how we represent ourselves individually and collectively, asking participants to consider their identity in social media and in public.”
